Honolulu

Today’s Wallpapers:

MtRainierThese are some shots from my recent trip to Hawaii- the first is a view of Honolulu from the top of Diamondhead, and the second is a shot of the sunrise/Mt. Rainier from the plane. The latter is a little grainy, so it may not be wallpaper-worthy for the more discriminatory of you readers, but it’s still a cool pic. Vote if you want a widescreen version of either of these- if I votes get enough I will post one.

Artistic-Other-44691I have been lax in my duties as a blogger lately, and it’s about to get worse. I’m leaving for Hawai’i soon, so I won’t be posting for at least 10 days. You’ll just have to do without your daily (or lately, weekly) dose of awesome wallpapers. I will return with plenty of tight pictures though, several of which I will no doubt turn into wallpapers for your exclusive enjoyment.

Abstract-Blue-12453For those of you familiar with the Netflix Prize, the 10% improvement barrier was broken yesterday by Bellkor Pragmatic Chaos! Just as I had started to consider entering, too. The math is somewhat arcane to me, but I’m learning quickly. I’m going to continue working on it even though the competition is over just because AI is so cool. And I want to see if a highschooler can do close to as well as a team of professionals.¬†But since that’s no longer really a viable option as a contest, I think I will concentrate my energies on Extend Firefox.

Today’s Wallpaper:

Earth-Sunset-38005I’m still preparing for my re-image- but not by backing up data. Now I’m planning some tight (hopefully) desktops, complete with custom made VSs and SysMetrixes (And maybe even a RainLendar). I’m pretty pumped for this. I never really got into desktop customization, but I’ve lined up some really nice ideas including Mario, Oblivion, Music, and Halo based desktops. I’ll post some screenshots as I finish each of them- probably one every 2 weeks or so.

I’ll be getting a re-image next Thursday. I must admit, I have rather mixed feelings about this. Though I was planning to re-image sometime next week anyways, it was with Windows 7, and on MY TERMS. This is a school required re-image (new software and shit), and it’s with XP- so I’ll have to transfer my new image from XP to 7. I am NOT looking forward to that.

Also, I added my RSS feed about 2 weeks ago. I have only 2 readers. 2 lonely readers (not only that, I actually KNOW one of them). Please join these 2 courageous fellows (or ladies) in subscribing to my feed. Just click the little RSS icon, then choose your subscription method of choice from the menu on the top right. I GUARANTEE I’ll post more if some more people subscribe. Let’s see if we can hit 10 by the end of the month.

Finally Fixed…

May 10, 2009

I fixed my computer..w/o losing ANY data. The original problem was that I overwrote the MBR for my XP partition with a Hackintosh kernel. Basically what this did was A)Make it so the partition was no longer recognized as NTFS (HFS+Partition error) and B)FUCK UP the bootloader. I fixed the former, after about 10 methods that didn’t work, with testdisk. The latter was a little trickier to fix, but I ended using a base boot.ini and NTLDR and replacing my current ones, then using a boot disk designed for NTLDR issues to fix the booting (did you know that ntldrismissing.com is a site?). At that point, I was feeling pretty good. I booted up, stared at the glorious CTL+ALT+DEL prompt, moved my cursor JUST to make sure it was working, and hit control. That froze my computer. And none of the fixes online worked. After about 6 hours of fruitlessly trying to fix this with various registry and BIOS hacks, I noticed that I had a restore point on my computer (22 of them, in fact. I plan to delete the older ones.). Unfortunately, at this point, I was working in a quickly installed Windows 7- which could not use said restore point(s). So, I pulled out my trusty pirated XP SP3 disk, and booted that fucker up. I quickly realized that this wasnt going to be as easy as I had thought. It wouldnt detect the restore point! In the end, I CREATED a restore point, then CVed the actual restore point and renamed it (ingenious, I know. The sad thing is that it took me 15 minutes to think of). That WORKED. So here I am. 4 days later. BACK WHERE I STARTED WITH A SHITLOAD OF HOMEWORK TO DO. The morals of this story- 1)Keep your XP disk (or at least have a link to a pirated download ;) 2)ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE. JUST DO IT. (Nike, I want some money for that advertisement.)

This is me w/o my XP:

Some new apps today. We got a new Skype, new Filezilla, and new Firefox! Haven’t been any good ones in a while, so it’s nice to get some updates. Just check out Filehippo for the updates.

The Billion App Countodown is coming to a close. The rules are quite confusing, but as far as I can tell, the billionth app DLed wins. You would win a MacBook Pro, a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, a 1TB Time Capsule, and a 32 GB iPod Touch. Hope I win!
